Our Programmes and Services

Individual Support

Sometimes things don’t go according to plan and a dad needs to talk to someone who really understands. We can do just that, and often more. Our support workers in Christchurch and Auckland, and our coordinator in Wellington are there to help dads sort things out, cope or just to listen.

New Fathers and Babies

Special things happen to a man when his baby is born. The early bond between father and baby is vital for a child’s long-term health and well-being.
Our emphasis is on helping family services engage new dads better, and to help both mums and dads understand quite how important the father-child bond is.

  • Our second New Babies Edition of Father & Child magazine will be distributed through 2012 in the three main centres as a special Welcome to dads with a new baby (look out for the Bounty pack).
  • Our Dads and Babies talk offers some amazing insights on how dads and babies affect each other, and how and why they are so good for each other.
  • Our Dads and Babies booklet is designed to help family service providers go beyond the cliches and really get into helping mums and dads work together the way they want.
  • We are involved in postnatal depression initiatives both nationally and in Christchurch.
  • Teenage Fathers

Teen dads have gone from being considered total write-offs to the the new darlings of the political establishment, and we’re taking a lot of credit for this.

  • Our teen fathers study published in 2001 was the first piece of research on this group of parents in New Zealand, and is as relevant today as it was then.

  • Solo Dads

Some dads really do do it all by themselves. Our Dependent on Dad study interviewed solo fathers with young children, who had little or no contact with their mother – the first study in New Zealand on this group of parents. We are available to present to staff an management about the specific needs of these families and ways of working with them.

    Correspondence Parenting Course

A 10-module course covering parenting of babies through to teenagers. Each module comes with a set of questions, answers are marked and feedback is given.
The material is focused on information about children’s development as well as parenting techniques for the different ages. We provide a certificate at the end.
The course is free for a limited number of dads and can be customised to the age of the child.

    Father & Child Magazine

A mix of factual reporting and personal stories, our quarterly magazine is an important resource for both dads and family support agencies.

    Training, talks and seminars

Talk to us about putting on a talk or a training seminar for your staff about the kinds of dads you would be working with.
